Melasma: Those dark spots we want to avoid

Hey, there! It’s Selene from Skin Reign.

I’m very excited to start this mini-blog so you can enjoy all the tips and info you find on my Instagram videos at @skin.reign, for those who prefer to read them. I love talking about skin in general and sharing what I’ve learned. So today I wanna start by talking a little bit about Melasma because it’s very important to protect your skin, especially in the summer.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a dark skin discoloration. It’s thought to be caused by sun exposure, genetic predisposition, hormone changes, or skin irritation. The easiest way to understand this skin condition is thinking that the cells that are in charge of producing our pigmentation just go crazy and start over-producing pigment. That causes dark spots over the cheeks, nose, upper lip, and the sides of the forehead.

How can we protect ourselves from this kind of damage?

Apply Sunscreen

You’ve probably read this a thousand times, but one more time it’s important to say it: Apply sunscreen every day. It doesn’t matter how cloudy or sunny the weather is when you look out the window. Even if it’s raining. Never forget to apply your sunscreen.

Using Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the perfect complement for your sunscreen. They help protect us from the sun; but also pollution, from the people that are smoking around us, and even from the occasional drink we have now and then. Hey... I’m not telling you that you shouldn’t have a drink, but remember that alcohol dehydrates us and causes damage.

That is when our antioxidants jump in and help us. Think of your antioxidant like a superhero, protecting your skin from all of these threats. You can include them in your skincare routine, but you should ingest them as well to seize all of their benefits. For example, Vitamin C is an amazing antioxidant, so it’s a great supplement in your diet!

Wear a Hat

If you are going to be outside, don’t forget to wear a hat. I know it’s like “Ugh, Hats?” YES! Don’t let worries about messing up your hair keep you from wearing hats. Hats protect your hair, eyes, and skin from the sun's rays. These days you can find super cute ones that can match your bathing suit and you’re still gonna look adorable while protecting your skin.

The best part? By wearing a hat, using sunscreen, and taking antioxidants you’re protecting from aging as well! So, these are really good tips to apply every day to take care of your skin.

I hope you enjoy this article and have a wonderful week.
