How to Deal with Adult Acne

Is there something scarier than adult acne? I don’t think so. The teen years are long gone but you find yourself still struggling with this skin condition. Adult acne is any form of acne or breakout that occurs after the age of 25. You might be asking yourself: “If I’m not a teenager where is the acne coming from?”. For the most part, the same factors that cause acne in teens are at play in adult acne. But there are some new factors that could be contributing to those blackheads and pimples. Let's look into it!

What causes adult acne?

Genetics: If we have it with us, unfortunately, more than likely we are gonna carry it along our entire life.

Hormones: Our hormones tend to affect many body functions, and not just when we’re in our days. Hormones are not a straight line, they fluctuate during the month. That’s why sometimes we get a random pimple. Another factor that can affect our cycle is birth control. When we start or stop birth control, our body takes around three months to adjust to this new addition or, removing those hormones that we were used to.

Stress: While stress alone isn't the cause pimples, it can trigger breakouts and make existing acne issues worse. Let’s breath, let’s take time for ourselves and not allow everything outside to drive us crazy.

Pollution: there are a lot of pollutants in the air like smog, bacteria, dirt, and free radicals. Since they are present in the environment, they can irritate our skin causing rashes and blackheads.

The wrong skin care routine: When we use products that are not suited for our skin type we can get breakouts which are often caused by clogged pores. Also, going to bed with our makeup on is a BIG NO.

You’re probably thinking: “My goodness! Everything is bad, everything causes acne!” No, it’s not everything but, yes there’s a lot of things. The bad news first, the good news second. The good thing is there are a few things you can do to keep it under control, because there are solutions.

What can we do about it?

The most important thing first: be kind to yourself! We can have a pimple and it’s not going to be the end of the world. You’re still beautiful. Let’s love ourselves no matter what.

  • Pimples: Benzoyl peroxide is great if we have the juice kind. Benzoyl peroxide attacks those big pimples and helps a lot. You have a wash form and you have a gel form. Both are great and you can include the one that adapts better to your routine.
  • Black heads: Salicylic acid will be your best bet and Tretinoin as well, you have over-the-counter or, obviously, prescription. If you go to your dermatologist, the one that you trust and you love, he will guide you through all of this.
  • Irritation: Sunscreen! Every time we use these products, our skin gets more sensitive and we have to protect our skin. The idea with all of these products is that you always have to use a really good moisturizer. Because all of these products are drying and we don’t want to over-dry our skin.

Never forget that you need to love yourself! You are beautiful no matter what, and a few pimples are not going to change that.

Thank you!

¡Gracias!
