What is Clean Beauty?

Hello, hello, mis amores!

Lately, much has changed in our relationship with ourselves and the world. As consumers, we've become more aware of our impact on the planet and what we put into our bodies. This new consciousness drives us to learn more and educate ourselves about the products we use. We want to buy from brands that are ethical and transparent, using skincare that's good for us and for the environment.

There're a lot of new terms to learn and understand, and we see labels mentioning things like all-natural, green, eco-friendly, chemical-free, vegan. But most of these terms are unregulated, it can be truly confusing to know if they are better for us. That's when the clean beauty movement steps in.

You know how important transparency is for me and Skin Reign. We've talked about Natural, Organic, and Safe Skincare and how we approach these terms. But what really excites me about the clean beauty movement is that's more than just a label. It's a new approach to how we choose the products we use every day and how we hold beauty brands accountable for their industry practices. If you are interested in starting to choose better products for yourself and the earth, let's talk about what is Clean Beauty!

What does Clean Beauty mean?

At its core, clean beauty means that what we are putting in our skin won't risk our health. Just like Safe Ingredients, it's all about keeping our skincare non-toxic. The term describes products and practices that focus on avoiding toxins, carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, or any other ingredients suspected to be harmful.

Since there's so little regulation, it’s up to us to become familiar with the most common toxins in our skincare. Some of the things Clean Beauty doesn’t support is synthetic fragrances or dyes and ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. But we should keep in mind there’s no amount of chemicals, organic ingredients, or sustainable practices that need to be met to label a product "clean". So, we need to look at it more like an approach or a movement.

The Clean Beauty Movement

Being more conscious about what we consume is a journey. It starts with questioning the industries that make our products and holding them accountable. The clean beauty movement is a response to the beauty industry practices and the growing concerns about the safety of cosmetics and skin care products. The center of the movement asks for transparency and helps educate consumers about the ingredients in their products.

When we advocate for Clean Beauty, we ask manufacturers to use safer ingredients and disclose what's inside the products we use daily. It’s a way to make ourselves more aware. Clean beauty aims to protect our health and support the body's natural process of creating healthy skin and hair. It's about caring for yourself, not just your skin. Clean beauty is more than just a trend; it's an approach to living that recognizes the importance of taking care of the whole person—mind, body, and soul.

Transparency and Labels

The most important part when choosing clean beauty is to become more aware of the ingredients and practices that are positive for us. From a brand perspective, it's about making the effort to be transparent and open about the entire process of creating a product that's not harmful. This includes listing all the ingredients present in our products and having honest labels. And with so many new terms, it's important to be clear about what we are and what we are not.

Companies can easily get away with using labels that mislead consumers because they aren’t regulated by the FDA. You can see a lot of empty words like “chemical-free” and “eco-friendly” used to capture attention. But these terms reveal nothing about the formula and how safe it is. "Natural" labeled products could still have irritants and do more harm than good, just think how poison ivy could be "100% natural".

Natural, organic, and clean

The truth is clean beauty doesn’t have to be all-natural. All cosmetics should contain some form of preservation to maintain the stability of the formulation. In the same way, certain chemicals need to be present to avoid bacteria and keep our products safe. If these ingredients are non-toxic and proven to have no harmful effects, they can be considered clean.

Clean Beauty can also be organic, but it’s not a requirement. The most important thing is that those ingredients are safe, regardless of where they come from. Because the goal of clean beauty is not being 100% perfect, instead it encourages us to sustain positive practices and allows people to make informed choices.

Should we worry about clean beauty?

My answer is yes! Empowering people to be more aware of the ingredients in skin care products is essential to take good care of ourselves and our bodies. The clean beauty movement encourages conversations about sustainable practices across the entire industry. It helps raise awareness about the impact of environmental sustainability on products and packaging.

Remember that this movement was born from a genuine need for more transparency and better-quality ingredients in skincare. Clean Beauty inspires us to question what we’re putting on our skin and whether it’s truly necessary. To learn, grow and love our bodies in every way possible is always a positive step.

And we consider Skin Reign a Clean Beauty brand since all our products are safe, cruelty-free certified, and organic!
